How to prepare for your senior photo session.

  1. Remember your face is the focus when picking out clothes. We want your face to dominate the photos not your clothes.

  2. Skirts are great but when to short tend will limit your posing options.

  3. Avoid clothes that make you look large, such as anything with big stripes that will add at least a size larger than you really are in photos.

  4. Avoid big distracting logos on your choice of clothes. Not only will it be a distractor it will also date the portrait.

  5. Choose varying styles of clothing: shirts with different necklines, casual and formal clothing, sweaters, and if you played or participated in a sport or activity something that represents that activity or sport.

  6. Jackets, scarfs, and hats may add a different look, so they are encouraged but not required.

  7. Clothes should be press, as wrinkles will show up in your portraits.

  8. We discourage clients from wearing white shirts in all of their portraits, because white tends to draw the viewers eye, and detracts your eye from the face of the subject.

  9. Girls and guys should have fingernails clean and filed.

  10. Black and blue fingernail polish keep popping up as a fashion trend. Don’t wear either for your senior portraits, it’s too trendy: it’ll make your fingernails look odd and they’ll look even stranger 20 years from now. Girls should really stick to neutral tones, light to mid pink is a good choice.

  11. Oily skin, especially on your face really is the enemy, oil will show up as unattractive shiny spots on your face in a photo, (especially on your forehead). Wear a foundation makeup that doesn’t have oil in it and if you do have oily skin, refresh your makeup with translucent powder during the shoot. Mascara clumps will show up in photos especially during your close ups. Avoid eyeshadows, lotions, blush, or anything with glitter in it, as it will show up as tiny white spots around your eyes. Moisturize your lips before your session, cracked lips will show up in photos.

  12. It’s nice to include special or important jewelry in your portraits however keep in mind that too much jewelry can be distracting. Pendant type necklaces will be tough to keep in the proper place when you move around as you pose.

  13. Ladies should have shaved under your arms the day of your session. Poses may have hands over your head and even wearing a sleeveless top, stubble may show and it won’t look pretty. Guys should make sure to shave their beards for the same reason.

  14. Don’t use a lot of hairspray, gel or other product in your hair. Your hair should move with you when you tilt your head and blow nicely in the breeze. Hair spray can be used to tame flyaways on top of your head or keep hair out of face.

  15. Sunburns are nearly impossible to fix or retouch.
